Who Is LASIK Surgery for? 5 Signs That It Could Be Right for You
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Don't let the name confuse you, LASIK surgery is a surgical process that uses lasers to reshape the surface of your eyes to help you see better.
Results can vary and individual factors will influence whether or not you're a good candidate for the procedure. The following characteristics, for people ages 18 and up, tend to suggest good candidacy for LASIK surgery:
Mild to moderate astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), or hyperopia
Stable vision for the past year, with stable and not-too-strong prescription for the past 1-2 years
Good health and no significant eye problems like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, keratoconus, or macular degeneration
A willingness to have realistic expectations, including the possible need for use of corrective eyewear under certain circumstances, if necessary (e.g., driving at night)
No pregnancy or nursing
When you consult with our optometry team, we'll make sure you know what to expect from your procedure and help you during the post-operative period to ensure you recover properly.
